"The Return Of Cineblog"
OK, look. The last few months really really sucked. I mean, seriously. However it seems likely that with the Chicago International Film Festival coming up, Cineblog will stage a return. In the meantime, here are some brief thoughts on some recent viewings
American Splendor - Really great. Paul Giamatti tries a little hard to be truly stunning, but he's still very very good. Judah Friedlander playing Harvey's friend Toby Radloff is however truly stunning.
The Magnificent Seven - If this was a movie that sprung out of nowhere it might not be too bad, but as a remake of The Seven Samurai it fails on every single level. A shining example of exactly how not to remake a film.
Pirates Of The Caribbean - A total blast
Dracula: Pages From A Virgin's Diary - Guy Maddin's sumptuous silent ballet retelling of the Dracula story was so gorgeous I really didn't register a lot of the problems other people had with it. Yeah it was a little overboard in a couple scenes from a sexual standpoint, but considering the source I wouldn't expect anything less.
Capturing The Friedmans - I'll be pretty shocked if I see a more thought-provoking movie all year. Has tons to say from a variety of standpoints, and raises violently mixed emotions about the people involved. The only complaint is it seems a tad too on the nose at one point near the end.
Looking through the list there was a lot I saw, and a lot of it was great. My first viewing of Contempt was almost life-changing. Irreversible was a stunning experience, but I have a hard time recommending it to anyone. Talk To Her was almost a better movie, but in a lot of ways it was a lot more offensive. Everyone should take a day off and watch the entire Kieslowski Three Colors Trilogy in one sitting. There were moments in the collection of Brakhage films I saw where I was almost but not quite blown away. There's something going on there but I don't know what it is yet.

Glad to see you're back. I stumbled onto CineBlog in the dormant period between March and now, and have enjoyed reading back through the old posts quite a bit. It's good to hear American Splendor mostly lives up to the hype... I just found out that it's playing near here in Barrington, which keeps us suburban schleps from clogging up the city theaters. =)
