In an earlier entry about Star Wars Episode II, I discussed how difficult it must be to act to a character or landascape that isn't there. I figured this could account for some of the wooden, lifeless performances in that movie. Then someone like Peter Jackson comes along, and makes these largely digital films that are so filled with life and energy that your realize that the only explanation for Star Wars' deficiencies is that Lucas is just a hack. I mean, I always suspected that, but I figured I would give him the benefit of the doubt. Bzzzzzzt.

So here's the deal. I quit my job last week. I got a new job in the city at the internet consultant where I worked before I went off to make pinball machines. I am still going to work on the next game freelance on nights and weekends. This new arrangement has certain advantages and disadvantages. The big advantage is I no longer have a three hour round trip commute every day. I'm also making way better money and benefits. However, because I'm freelancing, all that time im saving is getting eaten up anyways, and then some. Additionally, the train was the time I used to write cineblog entries in general, and now that its gone, I see that I'm not doing them (although holidays and such are currently interfering as well.) I actually got this on accident from netflix. It had drifted up my queue, and got shipped before I had a chance to rearrange things when I sent something back. Ironically, it is this film which has finally made me sit up and take notice of Godard.

Having read all the press regarding Todd Haynes' homage to Douglas Sirk, I made the special effort to see All That Heaven Allows before heading off to see Far From Heaven. This was a little difficult for me, I'm a huge Haynes fan, probably the only person I know to really enjoy Velvet Goldmine (although I admit it probably wouldn't hold up on a second viewing.) If there is anyone reading this who has yet to see Far From Heaven, and also hasn't seen any Sirk, I urge you to check Sirk out before seeing the Haynes. All That Heaven Allows and Written On The Wind are both out on DVD from Criterion.
